Middle East Crude Steel Output Zoomed 22% in February

The Middle East region saw tremendous rise in crude steel production during February 2019 in comparison with the year-before month. According to monthly crude steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), the regional production surged higher by over 22% year-on-year.

The production totaled 2.927 million tonnes (Mt), higher by 22.2% when matched with the production of 2.395 Mt in February last year. All countries reported increased production levels over the year.

Iran, with an output of 2.015 Mt was the largest producer in the region. The country accounted for almost 69% of the total regional output. Iran’s production surged higher by 21.7% from 1.656 Mt in Feb ’18. The Saudi Arabian output was up by 16.3% from 385,000 tonnes in Feb ’18 to 448,000 tonnes in February this year. The other key producers were the UAE (289,000 tonnes) and Qatar (175,000 tonnes), whose outputs surged higher by 43% and 15.3% respectively, worldsteel data said.

The combined output by the region during the initial two-month period of 2019 totaled 6.152 Mt, which is higher by 9.4% when matched with the output of 5.622 Mt in Jan-Feb ’18. The leading producers in the region were Iran (4.245 Mt), Saudi Arabia (917,000 tonnes), the UAE (593,000 tonnes) and Qatar (397,000 tonnes).
