How does PV module recycling work?

The useful life of a solar panel is about 30 years, and as the number of solar panels sold and installed increases, it is only a matter of time before a large number of panels reach the end of their useful life and must be disposed of. Solar panel recycling is still in its early stages, but as the renewable energy market continues to expand, the recycling process will play an increasingly important role.

Solar PV Panel Recycling

Photovoltaic module recycling is the process of recovering valuable materials from end-of-life solar panels. There are several ways to recycle solar panels, which can include some or all of the following three steps:

Removing the Frame and Junction Box: The process begins by removing the junction box, wires, and frame.

Separation of glass and silicon wafers: This can be done through thermal, mechanical or chemical processes. The module is shredded, sorted and separated.

Separation and purification of silicon cells and specialty metals: this can be done with chemical and electrical techniques. Silver, tin, lead, copper and other special metals can be recovered.

Recover valuable materials: Some rare elements in photovoltaic (PV) cells, such as gallium and indium, are being depleted from the environment over time. By recycling solar panels, we save vital materials that can be reused in new panel products, easing supply chain constraints and ultimately reducing the cost of solar energy.

Recycling solar panels also has economic benefits. According to the forecast of the International Renewable Energy Agency, by 2030, the cumulative value of recycled raw materials for global scrap battery panels will reach about 450 million US dollars, which is equivalent to the cost of raw materials required for the current production of about 60 million new battery panels.

All types of photovoltaic modules can be recycled. There are various methods for recycling solar panels, which can include some or all of the following three steps: removing frames and junction boxes, separating glass and silicon wafers, and separating and purifying silicon cells and specialty metals. SUNY GROUP has developed a mechanical technology that can recycle any type of photovoltaic panels in any state. At present, the technical equipment is relatively mature in all aspects, and has long-term cooperative customers in Europe, America, Asia and other places.
