Technologies for recycling photovoltaic panels
Solar panel recycling technology is an important research topic nowadays, with the wide application of solar panels, how to effectively deal with the waste at the end of their life becomes especially critical. Solar panels are constructed similarly to a sandwich structure, in which the core part is the battery cell. About 90% of commercial solar panels use silicon as the semiconductor material to convert light energy into electricity for energy conversion.
Within each cell, thin sheets of metal (usually silver) are arranged across the surface of the silicon crystals to carry current to the panel's copper conductors.
The battery cells are encased in a protective barrier, usually a transparent plastic called ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). The top is covered with a layer of glass and the back is encapsulated using another plastic material such as polyethylene terephthalate.
The steps for solar panel recycling are as follows:
Frame and junction box disassembly: First, the frame and junction box of the solar panel are disassembled using a fully automatic disassembler.
Separation of glass and silicon wafers: The glass and silicon wafers are separated by purely physical and mechanical methods.
Separation and purification of silicon cells and special metals (e.g. silver, tin, lead, copper): a variety of crushing, grinding, and sorting techniques are used to separate silicon cells from the special metals in them.
According to incomplete statistics, the materials in end-of-life solar panels each year (especially silver and silicon) could be about $20 billion in 2050. Some companies try to refurbish and reuse failing panels, or at least recycle some of the components. Reuse is the simplest and least expensive method of "recycling," but it requires the least processing and is the most costly.
