Lithium batteries contain precious metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, and aluminum, and the market demand for these materials is increasing yearly. Cobalt and nickel, in particular, have risen in value due to their widespread use in new energy applications. However, the process of mining the raw materials puts great pressure on the environment and fluctuates in price, making global lithium battery recycling particularly important. By recycling these precious metals, it is possible to reduce the over-exploitation of natural resources, while easing the pressure on the supply chain, lowering production costs, and ensuring the long-term sustainable use of resources.

One of the core technologies for lithium-ion battery recycling is crushing and sorting. This process breaks down used batteries into different components by physically crushing them to facilitate subsequent processing and sorting. Firstly, waste batteries are preliminarily crushed by a special crusher, and the liquid electrolyte inside the batteries is safely removed to avoid chemical reactions. The crushed material is then conveyed to magnetic, screening, and wind sorting equipment, where different physical characteristics (e.g. magnetism, size, density, etc.) are utilized to separate substances such as metals, plastics, and battery pole pieces.

After sorting, metallic substances such as cobalt, nickel, and copper are subjected to further chemical processing to extract valuable metals using leaching, solvent extraction, and other methods. These metals can then be smelted, refined, and reused in the production process of new batteries. For non-metallic materials, such as plastics and carbon powder, are further recycled or treated by physical or chemical means to reduce the environmental impact of the waste.

Associated equipment such as crushers, magnetic separators, screens, wind sorters, leaching towers, extraction equipment, etc., are key components in these recovery processes. The precise operation and efficiency of each piece of equipment directly affect the efficiency of the recycling and the purity of the material.

Lithium-ion battery recycling not only recovers valuable resources and reduces environmental pollution, but also reduces dependence on mineral resources and promotes resource recycling. With the rise of electric vehicles and renewable energy, lithium battery recycling will play an increasingly important role. Promoting the development and application of recycling technology will certainly play a positive role in promoting the development of the global green economy.
