How to recycle waste photovoltaic modules?
With the large-scale utilization of photovoltaic power generation, the recycling of decommissioned and waste photovoltaic modules has become an obvious problem, and it has also brought huge new business opportunities to the industry.
The structure of the crystalline silicon photovoltaic module is shown in the figure. The main components include surface glass, packaging material, silicon wafer, backplane and metal strip.
The surface toughened glass is used to receive sunlight, enhance the mechanical strength, durability and optical transparency of the components; the packaging material generally uses ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) with excellent moisture resistance, and EVA is on the glass/sealant/back The board structure has good adhesion performance; the back board (TPT) is a sandwich structure, and the outer 2 layers of polyvinyl fluoride film (PVF) are coated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Photovoltaic panel recycling method:
At present, there are mainly three types of mature photovoltaic module recycling and treatment technologies, including physical separation, organic solvent dissolution, and a combination of heat treatment and chemical methods.
The physical separation method is simple to operate and the process is environmentally friendly, so it is also the most widely used recycling method at present.
The physical crushing method includes the processing and crushing of grounding box, photovoltaic panel frame, photovoltaic panel glass and photovoltaic panel, which can realize the recycling and collection of valuable metals of various components of waste photovoltaic materials.
Photovoltaic panel recycling process
First remove the aluminum frame and junction box of the component, then crush the frameless component, separate the tin-coated solder ribbon and glass particles, and then grind the rest to obtain metal, silicon powder, backplane particles and EVA particles by electrostatic separation.
Photovoltaic panel recycling value:
PV recycling can become an important part of the PV value chain. Recycling photovoltaic panels at the end of their useful life can free up vast amounts of raw materials and other valuable components. Recycled materials are reinjected into the economy and can be used to produce new photovoltaic panels or sold into global commodity markets, increasing the security of future raw material supplies.
Preliminary estimates from IRENA indicate that the cumulative value of raw materials that can be recycled from photovoltaic panel technology could reach $450 million by 2030. That equates to the amount of raw material currently needed to produce about 60 million new panels, or 18GW of generating capacity. By 2050, the recoverable value could accumulate to more than $15 billion, equivalent to 2 billion panels, or 630GW of generating capacity.
